Toenail Fungus

Toenail Fungus

Thick, discolored, and crumbling nails can be a sign of a serious fungal infection. Toenail fungus is typically a result of spending time in moist areas such as locker rooms and showers. Fungal infections are highly contagious but can be cured quickly with the proper help and treatment.

Having thickened, discolored nails is the most telling sign of a fungal infection. Additional symptoms may include:

  • Brittle, crumbly or ragged nails.
  • Distorted nail shape.
  • A dark nail color caused by debris buildup.
  • A foul smell around the nails.

At LePoer Podiatry, we treat toenail fungus using our advanced XEO® Laser Genesis solution. This device uses laser light to heat the infection around your toes, killing the fungus quickly. Most infections can be cured with only a set of treatment sessions, and no downtime is required.

What Is Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus can be caused by several fungal infections, the most common of which is called dermatophyte. The fungus can infect anyone, but certain people are at a greater risk of developing toenail fungus than others. Here are some factors that make it more likely for you to develop this problem:

  • Being older, owing to reduced blood flow.
  • Sweating excessively and/or walking barefoot in damp areas.
  • Having a history of athlete’s foot.
  • Having a minor skin or nail injury.
  • Having diabetes or circulation problems.
  • Having a weakened immune system.

What Are the Treatment Options?

XEO® Laser Genesis is a non-surgical, light-based device that destroys fungus by heating it up. This system is designed for exceptional control and precision, minimizing the risk of damaging the surrounding skin. When administered onto the treatment site, XEO® penetrates below the nail and destroys the fungus at its source. Sessions take little time, and results are long-lasting.
